Choosing a fitter

How to Choose a Club Fitter: What to Ask Before Booking

Choose a fitter who can explain how they will understand your game, compare equipment, and support the recommendation. A launch monitor is a useful tool, not a complete fitting process.

Source-backed questions for choosing a fitting service.

A large equipment wall, an impressive simulator, or a familiar brand can make an appointment look promising.

Before booking, ask how the fitting will work.

You do not need to interview the fitter about every technical detail. You need to establish whether the service matches your question, budget, and expectations.

Will they begin with your game?

PING and Titleist both describe understanding the golfer’s needs before refining equipment specifications.

Expect a conversation about your current clubs, usual shots, frustrations, preferences, and intended improvement.

A useful question to ask the facility is:

How do you decide what to test for someone with my concern?

Listen for a process that connects your objective to the comparison, not a guaranteed diagnosis before anyone has seen you hit.

Relevant experience matters too. Ask about the fitter’s experience with the category or situation you are bringing, such as long-end gapping, juniors, or accommodating a movement restriction.

How will they establish the baseline?

Ask whether you will hit your current equipment and what information you should bring.

The baseline gives the alternatives a reference. If you do not own a suitable comparison club, say so beforehand; the fitter should explain what can still be assessed and what cannot be claimed.

Also ask which ball will be used. The resulting flight belongs to a club-and-ball combination, so the testing ball should not remain an unstated detail.

What equipment can you actually test?

Find out which brands, heads, shafts, lengths, and adjustable specifications are available for your appointment.

A brand-specific fitting can still provide useful evidence. A multi-brand fitting offers a different scope, but breadth alone does not establish quality.

The important distinction is between:

  • What was tested.
  • What the fitter recommends from those results.
  • What remains an expectation about an untested option.

If the delivered build will differ from the test configuration, ask how that difference will be handled.

Will they explain the comparison?

Ask how the fitter evaluates representative misses, shot variation, and close results.

You should be able to see more than the best shot. Equally, a confirmed tracking error should not be treated as genuine performance.

The fitter should be willing to explain the main benefit, the trade-off, and why the recommendation suits your goal. Keeping the current club or recommending another test should remain possible outcomes.

Be cautious about promises of a precise distance gain or score improvement before the assessment.

What will you receive afterward?

Clarify:

  • Whether you receive written specifications and comparison results.
  • Whether the fitting fee is independent of purchasing.
  • Any purchase credit, adjustment, return, or follow-up terms.
  • How substitutions and delivery questions are handled.

Do not assume a service is included because another facility offers it. PING describes supplying recommendations and fitting data at its named Fitting Experience locations; that is a published service example, not a universal entitlement.

Make the choice understandable

Credentials, equipment, software, and reputation can inform your decision. None replaces a clear explanation of the service being offered.

The best question before booking is not simply “What technology do you use?” It is “How will you use it to answer my fitting question?”

Ask about the fitting before you book

Find a FORJ fitting location and ask about its process, available equipment and follow-up. Services, fees and booking details vary by location.
