Driver Launch and Spin: Read the Pair Before Changing Either
A spin number is incomplete without launch, ball speed, delivery, and the player’s objective. Lower is not a fitting strategy on its own.

Launch angle tells you the ball’s initial vertical direction. Spin rate tells you how quickly it rotates after leaving the face. They describe different aspects of the shot, and their combination matters.
A reference chart can help interpret that combination—but only if you use the correct inputs.
The same ball speed can have different reference combinations
PING’s December 2022 driver chart lists recommended launch-and-spin combinations for distance optimization in standard conditions.
At 150 mph ball speed:
| Attack angle | Recommended launch | Recommended spin |
|---|---|---|
| −2° | 11.1° | 2,750 rpm |
| 0° | 12.4° | 2,600 rpm |
| +4° | 15.1° | 2,300 rpm |
If needed, scroll this table horizontally. Keyboard users can focus the table region and use the arrow keys.
The ball speed is held constant. The recommended combination changes with attack angle.
A reading of 2,750 rpm therefore means something different when paired with approximately 11° launch and −2° attack angle than when paired with another delivery and launch condition.
It is not enough to ask whether the spin looks high.
References are not pass/fail thresholds
PING says launch within 1° and spin within 300 rpm of its chart values are generally near optimal.
Those tolerances matter. The spin neighbourhoods around the −2° and +4° recommendations overlap:
- −2° reference: 2,450–3,050 rpm
- +4° reference: 2,000–2,600 rpm
Their launch neighbourhoods do not overlap. That is another reason to read the pair rather than judge spin separately.
The chart also contains a radar-versus-camera attack-angle lookup note. Follow the source’s instructions when using that chart, while checking the measurement convention of the actual device. Do not assume every monitor can be compared using a universal correction.
What the chart cannot decide
These are recommended combinations, not measured outcomes from the player in front of you.
They do not establish:
- That changing attack angle will produce the listed launch and spin.
- Which head or shaft will achieve the desired result.
- Whether the distance-oriented reference suits a player prioritizing control or particular playing conditions.
Use the reference to choose a better test—not to skip the test.
The spin overlap is 2,450–2,600 rpm. Applying the same ±1° launch tolerance gives 10.1–12.1° for the −2° reference and 14.1–16.1° for the +4° reference: those launch intervals do not overlap.
